Crews had just returned to the firehouse from a boat call when a local area resident stopped to report that three ducklings were stuck in a storm drain at Light Street and Hoffman Drive. Chief 20 (Snyder) and Attack 20 with 5 responded. Residents had rescued one duckling prior to FD arrival. Crews assessed the situation and determined that the best approach was to attempt to flow water down the drain pipe to the next storm grate and catch the ducklings in a fish net. Firefighter B. Smith placed the booster line from the Attack in the pipe and began flowing water. Within a few minutes Firefighters M. Koppenhaver and G. Crosby made a grab and placed the second duckling with his sibling in a box. The third rescue proved to be a bit more challenging as this duckling found a hiding spot in the drain system. Crews attempted to bait the duckling with his siblings, but he would not cooperate. Crews called for Tanker 20 to support operations with more water. Additional water was slowly added to the drain and the duckling moved from its hiding spot to higher ground and was captured in a net by Firefighter B. Smith. The ducklings were placed in a box and moved to the side yard in an attempt to bring the mother out. After about 5 minutes the mother duck flew from a neighbors yard and landed next to the box. The box was placed on its side and the mother duck placed her ducklings in a row and moved off into the brush as a happy family. Other personell assisting at the scene were Firefighters T. Miller, V. Heckert; 2nd Asst. Chief C. Hardy; and Social Member K. Ibberson....
